Does Steroids taint the Steeler Dynasty of the 70's?

by Marco D'Angelo on 06/25/2008 6:00 PM

Growing up in Pittsburgh I'm a Steeler Fan as is every person in Pittsburgh. It could be April and the Sports talk shows in Pittsburgh would still be talking about the Steelers. The city lives and dies with it's beloved Steelers. There have been many rumors over the years that the Steeler Dynasty may have been Steroid driven.

The rumors of steroids became official when former Steeler Steve Courson spoke in front of Congress in April of 2005. Courson stated then that several Steelers were taking steroids and that Coach Noll and Owner Art Rooney were aware of it.

Well yesterday one of the most notable names from the Steeler Dynasty Terry Bradshaw admitted to using Steroids during his career in Pittsburgh but  states he only took the Steroids to speed up his healing process not as a performance enhancing drug. But if you hurt you can't perform right ? So if  you speed up the healing process you now can perform so didn't you just enhance your performance?

On juice or off juice I love my Steelers so should I feel bad that they won 4 Super Bowls in the glory years? What's your thoughts?

A couple of things Marco:

1. Very few people take steroids just for the "healing process." As an avid weight lifter of 20 years, I can tell you that's bullshit.  It's cop out. Especially the stuff they were using back then. It was no where near the pharmaceutical grade steroid that is available today. Hence, all the Steelers from that era dropping dead.

2. You shouldn't care one bit. Any sports fan, especially of an NFL team, who thinks their favorite players aren't on steroids is either naive or just plain stupid. Hell, the Cowboys of the 90's were doing cocaine, steroids and everything else and I still loved them. You know why? Because we root for laundry, not people. Unless you go over to Emmitt Smith's house and hang out with him, you have no idea what kind of human being he is. Anyone can put on an act. There is a guy in New England who has mastered it. His name is Tedy "Lights, camera, action" Bruschi. He's a prick of a human being but fans love him because he tells a cameraman to start filming and then plays with his kids at the Super Bowl for all to see. True Story.

Bottom line: We root for uniforms with people in them. Sometimes a player will take on a special meaning to a fanbase like a Brett Favre or Walter Payton but in reality, we root for the jersey and helmet. Your Steelers did steroids. My Cowboys did steroids. I know God damn well these Patriots are doing steroids. If we actually knew all the pro athletes on steroids, sports fans everywhere would cry themselves to sleep.

I can't wait either Marco.  I'm counting down the days. Man a Steelers and Cowboys fan in the same office. Who would have ever thought it was possible? That's OK. I was on the radio just Tuesday answering a question on who I thought was the best team of all-time. You can't match up teams because of the size differences from each era. But when you go down the list, position-by-position, it has to be the Steelers of the 70's. Those Cowboys and Raiders teams they beat back then were some of the best teams ever assembled in their own right. The Steelers were just a little bit better. And while I love Deion, I also mentioned that Mel Blount, not Deion Sanders, is the best CB of all-time. There was just no ESPN back then so people forget how dominant Blount really was when he played. Best team ever in my opinion.

By the way, LaMarr Woodley is a future stud for the Steelers. How he lasted until the second round I'll never know. He came on at the end of last season and I'm hearing great things about him this summer as well. Woodley gets 8-10 sacks for Pittsburgh this year if he stays healthy.

Steelers had one of the best drafts of any team this year, also stealing (no pun intended) Rashard Mendenhall in the 1st round.

They should be tough once again this year as long as that secondary improves. Against the Colts and Pats you have to get to the QB and the Steelers have the players to do that, although they struggle getting to Brady for some reason. I never understood that.
