My wife was out of town this past weekend for her nephew's first birthday, so I got to babysit the dog and watch sports and movies all weekend.
Such is the tough life of Matty O'Shea. I haven't been able to spend a
full afternoon in a sportsbook in a while, so I decided to watch my
games at Green Valley Ranch on Sunday afternoon. My games being the
Cubs-Pirates, Red Sox-Brewers, Syracuse-Notre Dame lacrosse and Game 7
of the Celtics-Cavs series, which was on a 100-foot screen in HD in the
middle of the book.
I had the Cavs as my Triple Dime NBA Eastern Conference Play O' the Year
and got into a nice shouting match with a Celtics fan who still
believed his team could cover the spread in the last 20 seconds even
though he would be happy no matter what because his team would win the
game regardless. This is my least favorite kind of sports fan. He is
a homer who has money on his team - stands up and draws more attention
to himself by unintentionally explaining to more than his friends
exactly how his team will hit six free throws in the final seconds
while assuming the opponent won't score again to win by 9 - yet it
doesn't matter and he is still just as pleased as punch because Boston
is in the Eastern Conference Finals. Let's just say I was very happy
when Cleveland's Sasha Pavlovic buried a wide-open 3-pointer from the
corner with 8 seconds left to prevent the cover. I closed the argument
by proclaiming, "Pistons in a sweep."
I love Boston fans because they are just as passionate about sports as I am. Just look at this playful argument respectrayallen34 and I are having right now
about his favorite player's decline. Trust me, it's all in good fun.
I talked badly about the C's most of the season until they became the
first team to sweep the Texas Triangle since the Sacramento Kings in
2001. And yes RRA34, I know Ray hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 31.7
seconds remaining at Dallas to help complete the feat. But seriously,
I enjoy these debates and am definitely looking forward to a few more
when I hit Beantown early Thursday morning.
I'll be at Fenway Park on Thursday afternoon to watch Dice-K go for win
#8 and will then be watching Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals at
one or more of Boston's various pubs. Any recommendations here would
be greatly appreciated. Then I'll be heading to Foxboro on Saturday
for the lacrosse Final Four, as my Orange go for their record 10th
national championship. Laugh if you want, but I was there for their
last national title victory over Navy at Ravens Stadium back in 2004 in
front of over 40,000 fans. They did not make the Final Four the next
year, ending an incredible streak of 22 straight years that they had
made it to the national semifinals. Last year, they missed the NCAA
tournament altogether for the first time since 1982.
Anyway, I
don't want to bore you guys with the lax talk though I think you can
bet on these games at the Wynn. Top-seeded Duke is the favorite to win
it all after all the crap they've dealt with over the past couple years
with the rape allegations, and hopefully we will be playing them on
Monday for the title after we dispose of second-seeded Virginia.
Needless to say, I'm looking forward to a fun week that all started
with a 4-0 day at GVR. Let's keep it rolling tonight with
another Game 7 winner
