The image http://academy.officiating.com/images/delaney_big.jpg cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

The Game 2 refs tonight are Dan Crawford, Bob Delaney and Ken Mauer.

You guys all know that the refs will impact this championship series, so I thought I would give you a game-by-game breakdown of key trends for each crew member:

Dan Crawford (Home Team ATS: 47-50-1; O/U 47-51)
  • Celtics are 1-4 ATS & 2-3 SU in the last 5 games he has called
  • Lakers are 5-0 SU in the last 5 games he has called
  • Home underdogs of less than 5 points are 6-11 ATS in his games
  • The UNDER is 6-2 in the last 8 Lakers games he has called

Bob Delaney (Home Team ATS: 37-33-1; O/U 37-35)

  • Lakers are 0-3 ATS in the last 3 games he has called
  • Celtics are 0-5 SU & ATS in the last 5 games he has called
  • The OVER is 5-1 in the last 6 Lakers games he has called
  • The UNDER is 4-1 in the last 5 Celtics games he has called
  • The UNDER is 14-7 in his game when the total is between 185-194.5

Ken Mauer (Home Team ATS: 37-46-1; O/U 39-44)

  • Lakers are 6-1 SU & 6-0-1 ATS in the last 7 games he has called
  • Celtics are 7-0 SU & 5-2 ATS in the last 7 games he has called
  • Home underdogs of less than 5 points are 3-11 ATS in his games
  • The OVER is 5-1 in the last 6 Celtics games he has called
  • The UNDER is 5-1 in the last 6 Lakers games he has called
***

Special note: I have my Triple Dime NBA Finals Total Play O' the Year going on this game and have cashed 11 straight winners in Celtics games.

FYI, I do believe Bob Delaney is the best ref in the NBA.  He served three years as a New Jersey State Trooper, working undercover to gather evidence against organized crime.  At least you know he is fair, and his numbers back that up.

Matty,

Yea, saying a ref does a nice job is dangerous territory, no matter how great they are....kinda like praising a atty or politician - so many folks think of them as less than human, when in fact, they are US - just doing their job, ect.

I've been Coaching for (and playing hoops before that), and I'm getting the genuine opinion that these guys are actually - again dangerous territory - doing as good as possible - and they are actually pretty damn good at what they do, ALL THINGS CONSIDERED.

I've taken a different approach to referee - coach relationship in the last few years, and it has been remarkably successful....I simply do not scream and yell and critique what the stripes do...with calls, I simply ask for an explanation - say OK - just trying to understand what she did and what she needs to do to avoid getting more of those calls - OR just calmly explaining that I really do disagree with you, but if that's how you saw it, OK - hopefully, it'll all even out....ect, ect.  I always hear the critics of this say, "YOU HAVE to scream and complain or you won't get the calls".  I have found that the exact opposite has been the case almost entirely without exception!  As cornball as it might sound - when you treat people as you would like to be treated in the exact same situation - they will respond - whether it's a subconscious reaction or not - very favorably and in a bang-bang call - with little or no time to gage the exactness of something - and it';s almost totally even.....the call will go our way 9 of 10 times....really.

Two aspects of Coaching and Refs I NEVER understood - first is the act of ref bashing, tirade, ect....makes it, "Look Like you're coaching" - but doesn't really help your players - and actually makes these coaches look like out-of-control blowhards....

2nd is the SUITS, ect, that a Hoops Coach just thinks they have to wear....it's a basketball Game....I wear a shirt and tie cause it's expected, but why not just a polo and pants?  Why dress up in a Coat and tie in a hot stuffy gym?  (& Old Men wearing Uni's in Baseball - another tradition WAY past it's time)

I sit 9 several rows off the floor on the baseline of the Rose Garden at and have for 19 years for 1/3 Portland's home games....These refs must patrol so much lightening quick action is amazes me how they get most of it right....as many professions, a guy (or Gal - if it's Violet Palmer, ect), can get 100 calls right, it';s the ONE they miss that everyone will see and judge them on - and it's their job and they should be judged on it.....but good god that's a demanding job.  And again with coaches, I think folks truly EXPECT them to act like a clown twd the stripes....

Jerry Sloan.  As a BULLS FAN - you MUST know how salty this guy is....

This sonuvagun has the mouth of an ALLEY CAT!  I'm no saint, but I CANNOT take my girls (could not, when my youngest was 0-10 yrs old - & STILL don't want to) to a Jazz Game due to this dude....

I AM NOT KIDDING.

I have never seen a guy get away with SO MUCH - granted he's the DEAN of NBA Coaches....but his language is so filthy....it is almost astounding....and he is ALWAYS out of the BOX!!!!  He wanders down to the baseline....UP THE BASELINE twd the Hoop....and they just ignore him!

EVEN the refs that LOOK for fights must have been told to back off and ignore the old coot....Steve Javie....tghe dude that threw out Blazer Broadcaster MIKE RICE for overhearing him proclaim into the mike that Javie made a bad call - ignores him...

THE ONLY POSITIVE I CAN SAY ABOUT SLOAN'S DEMEANOR IS HIS CREATIVE USE OF THE TERM ....WELL, LETS JUST SAY IT RHYMES WITH 'BLOCK-DUCKER'.....Sloan uses this term with such frequency and versatility it is almost amusing...

Jerry can use the term as a NOUN, VERB ADJECTIVE, ect....even think I heard it as a PRONOUN....Block-duckerly'....amazing!

Javie is just the only guy I'd rather NOT see at a HOME game....

Corbin or Forte we're in good shape for the under....wheew.

LOVE seeing Malloy , McCutchen, Garretson, even Dick B. - but also must think it's not as good for the Finals Ratings...if that's EVER concidered....so many FT's and FOULS....like last game

51 FOULS!  53 FT's!  Not all-time high, but not really low either

Great stuff Steve - I'm wondering how these guys will impact this game tonight.  They are really the best of the best, and I wonder if we'll see Brothers & Malloy, who are two of my favorites.

MEANT TO SAY - as long as WE DO NOT see a ref like Corbin or Forte when we're on the Under....

OR Nunez ... Kennedy is also a low-foul, 'Let-Em-Play', guy

I always thought of old-timers Garretson, Bavetta as 'Strict Constructionist" refs....(sorry - little reference  from my Con-Law days)

I agree with Delaney as one of the good guys....Tom Washington, Sean Corbin are also very personable guys....who get in really engaging dialog with crowd members.

AT BLAZER GAMES, PDX Pro Golfer Peter Jacobsen has the section of 8 seats down a few rows in front of us, and he is a CRACK-UP....routinely engages guys like Corbin...or Violet Palmer in game-long conversations entirely apart from hoops....Jacobsen also quite often goes to the games BY HIMSELF....and gets REALLY comfortable - stretches out and even drapes himself over 2-3 of his seats....he's so damn funny, too....honest to God...outside of Golf, he could have very easily made a career in Standup.

HEY GUYS WHAT BOUT RONGARETSON, DAN CRAWFORD, BENET SALVATORRE, STEVE JAVIEE, ED F RUSH, DIK BAVETTA, AND JOEY CRAWFORD I  HAD THEM AS THE BEST OFICIAL NBA , BUT WHAT YOU GUYS THINK BOUT THEM AS REFS FOR THE NBA FINALS?

Not a fan of guys like Joey Crawford who seem to let things get personal with players (i.e. Tim Duncan).  I respect Bavetta and Javie to a degree but think Delaney is the most fair.

If we see Malloy...you can almost BANK on an UNDER....pretty unreal UNDER numbers for Malloy - regardless of Conf., Tempo, teams...

Can we at LEAST predict a few less fouls?

That was more than CHIPPTY the other night....got a little rough.  Who knows maybe as many or more??

posted by Stevebeav on 06/08/2008 2:35 PM

Yea...the ONLY issue I eve have is when these guys....Crawford esp., start buying into having this power...and try to carve out a celeb type image of themselves...

The fact that the CASUAL sports fan would probably Identify with the name Joey Crawford - is a problem in itself, IMO

How can Crawford be refing a game when the Celtics are 1-4 when he refs them and the Lakers are 5-0.

That seems just a little weird.

He should not be able to ref when the data shows that he might be favoring 1 team!!!
