I will spare everybody grades on EVERY team in Thursday's NBA draft and instead focus on those teams I thought either really impressed me or really blew it.
BEST DRAFTS (A)
Boston Celtics - Sure, they passed on Memphis guard Chris Douglas-Roberts just like my Chicago Bulls did, but the defending champs still got a couple nice prospects in J.R. Giddens and Bill Walker. Both have star qualities and should benefit greatly from playing with the best veteran group of players in the NBA.
Indiana Pacers - I am a big fan of Brandon Rush and think he will fit in nicely alongside his brother and new point guard T.J. Ford. The jury is still out on center Roy Hibbert, but I think he will be better than both of the Lopez twins. Like the Bulls, the Pacers needed to shake up the roster in an effort to compete in the Central Division, and I think they did just that.
Miami Heat - I had Mario Chalmers as a lottery pick, so getting him in the second round may allow the Heat to keep Michael Beasley and get back to playoff form without making a big deal. I hate to say it, but I agree with ESPN and think Miami had the best draft.
Minnesota Timberwolves - Fans of this team probably still hate GM Kevin McHale, but the trade for Kevin Love and Mike Miller gives Al Jefferson a lot more help and should make the T-wolves a lot more competitive.
Portland Trail Blazers - Adding Jerryd Bayless to the talent this team already has is scary. I give them 3-4 years before they make their return to the Western Conference Finals and become a championship contender once again.
WORST DRAFTS (F)
Charlotte Bobcats - D.J. Augustin was a great college player, but name one NBA player under 6-foot who has made a positive impact at the next level not named Allen Iverson. Augustin will be going up against point guards like Chris Paul and Derek Rose on a nightly basis, and I simply don't see how he will be successful in the pros. MJ should know better than this, but again he misjudges talent.
Detroit Pistons - Is Pistons GM Joe Dumars losing his magic touch? He picked up three players in Walter Sharpe, Trent Plaisted and Deron Washington who may all not be NBA players. If this team does not make some deals in the offseason, they will not be in the Eastern Conference Finals for a seventh straight year.
Houston Rockets - Former Syracuse forward Donte Greene has bust written all over him, and he has a perfect mentor on how to take bad shots and lose in the playoffs in Tracy McGrady. I also certainly don't see Joey Dorsey and Yao Ming studying the playbook together.
Phoenix Suns - As Floridachad said on Thursday night, Bart Simpson better stay away from Phoenix. Sideshow Bob Part 2 will be arriving in the Valley of the Sun shortly in the form of the less talented, more awkward-looking Lopez twin. I also read that Malik Hairston is a bigger version of Quentin Richardson. Not sure that is a good thing. This team never should have let Joe Johnson leave town.
Sacramento Kings - If Ron Artest didn't want out of Sacramento before the draft, he certainly will be gone before the start of the regular season. The Kings took the surprise of the first round in Jason Thompson with the 12th overall pick and then drafted two players they could have probably signed as free agents in the second round. Clueless.
