Does the UFC have the best fighters & product in the world?

I missed UFC 86 due to a buddy's wedding, but apparently I missed quite an event.  Not only did Quinton "Rampage" Jackson suffer a surprising loss to Forrest Griffin last Saturday in a controversial decision for the light heavyweight championship, but we also will not be seeing Rampage back until 2009 due to the following medical suspensions I just discovered...

  • Quinton Jackson - suspended until Jan. 2 due to possible left knee, tibia, fibia and thumb injuries (can be cleared early by orthopedic doctor); minimum suspension until Aug. 5 with no contact until July 27 for precautionary reasons
  • Forrest Griffin - suspended until Sept. 4 due to right-upper-eyelid laceration (can be cleared early by doctor)
  • Chris Lytle - suspended until Sept. 4 due to laceration near right eye (can be cleared early by doctor)
  • Josh Koscheck - suspended until Aug. 5 with no contact July 27 for precautionary reasons
  • Marcus Aurelio - suspended until Jan. 2 due to possible left-thumb ligament injury (can be cleared early by orthopedic doctor); minimum suspension until Aug. 5 with no contact until July 27 for precautionary reasons
  • Justin McCully - suspended until Jan. 2 due to possible left-shoulder injury (can be cleared early by doctor)
  • Cole Miller - suspended until Sept. 4 due to facial lacerations (can be cleared early by doctor)
  • Jorge Gurgel - suspended until Jan. 2 due to right tibia, fibia and elbow injuries (can be cleared early by orthopedic doctor)
  • Dennis Siver - suspended until Aug. 20 with no contact until Aug. 5 for precautionary reasons
  • Justin Buchholz - suspended until Sept. 4 due to scalp laceration (can be cleared early by doctor)

UFC seems to be really taking off yet I only saw one post on the Forums about the latest event from Sterlingman when I got back to Vegas.  I would like to get your opinions on how the UFC can become more mainstream and what we can do here to help promote it.  Mixed Martial Arts in general seems to be having a bit of an identity crisis right now, with Affliction now putting together its first card on July 19 in Anaheim.  UFC President Dana White decided to fight back by putting an event featuring middleweight champion on Spike TV the very same night in an answer to his greatest competition to date.

It seems to me though that this competition is not healthy nor is it helping the sport right now.  The biggest problem I have had watching MMA is that I have no idea who has the very best fighters in the world.  I just read that Affliction's card will be headlined by Fedor Emelianenko, who is supposedly considered the best heavyweight in the world.  But what does that say then about UFC heavyweight champ Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, who became the first fighter to win both Pride and UFC titles?

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban even had some choice words for White, as he is involved with MMA through HDNet fights. "Remind Dana that being hungry and running a business is a whole lot different than being hunted and running a business," said Cuban.  As you can see, all is not right with the powers that be, which seems to be a growing issue within the sport.  It reminds me of the satellite radio battle between Sirius and XM, with listeners continously getting confused by which service is better.

Regardless, I loved boxing back in the day but am really a strong believer that MMA has taken over as one of the top betting sports of choice.  This is especially true here in Vegas, and I just hope everybody can settle their differences to make it one of the best.

Ariana Celeste has to be the hottest card girl in the fight business.

I love the UFC, problem is that I have watched all the PPVs for the last 2 years and still don't know half the fighters.  There are too many guys to keep tabs on right now.  If you don't know the fight, the underdog has been a good bet.

UFC also has to watch out, as great champs like Randy Couture, and great ambassadors like Big John McCarthy are leaving for greener pastures.  UFC better start taking care of their guy's wallets as well as their health, or they will be left in the dust.

I watched the Griffin, Rampage fight and didn't think that the decision was controversial.  Even Rampage's comment in the ring were that he got beaten.  Truth is that it was a close fight, except for one absolutely dominating 2ndr-round by Griffin that probably won it for him.

Good points Sweat Hog - I have heard a mixed bag in terms of reactions to the decision.  One of my good friends covers the UFC and had Rampage winning on his scorecard, as did several others.  The main conclusion I heard though is that Griffin didn't do enough to de-throne the champion.  Regardless, I heard it was the best fight in quite some time, and both guys were obviously hurt at the end.

It was a great fight and good lead up to the Wimbledon final on Sunday. Overall great weekend for a sports fan. I thought Griffin won but it could of just as easily been a split decision. I also took into consideration when I bet on Griffin what would the best outcome be for the UFC and at +230 it was great value. After the fight before the decision that is exactly what I thought was it enough defeat the champion if it was boxing maybe not, but in the UFC on Saturday night it was enough.

Ya, I thought it was Griffin's just because of the 2nd round dominance.  Also, I was drinking heavily and had a pile of cash on Griffin at +245!  Ya me.  Good fight, my buddies and I were kidding that Forest looks like Opie/Richie Cunningham, but never seems to get too rattled at all.  Balls of steel that boy has.

There's no doubt that it's great for the sport that Griffin won.

I think Dana White is both good and bad for the sport. The good is he really loves MMA and I believe he does what he believes is in the best interest for his company. But I believe his quest to squash all competition is short sighted. We all know a guy like Kimbo Slice can't beat the best fighters in the UFC. I don't think anyone would debate that. But if someone like that can help advance the sport in the short term, doesn't that help everyone involved make more money over the long haul? I think competition is good for the UFC because when you watch the other leagues, you realize how much better the fighters in the UFC are. If you have nothing to compare it to, I think it hurts the sport at this stage. But what do I know?

No.

Lots of HGH & little skill.

LCG,

Let' be honest. The best MMA fighter would KILL the best boxer. The boxer has one shot to not only land a punch, but land a KO. After that, his arm or leg is an instant pretzel.

I would say lots of HGH and lots of skill.  Those dudes are scary, especially Georges St. Pierre.  I don't think that guy is even human.

I think the boxer is in better condition. No question. But they are trained as a sport. Not to fight. I know that sounds stupid, but they can't hit certain areas or when someone is down. They are not supposed to grab too much or head butt. All of that is allowed in MMA. In a boxing match the boxer obviously. In a street fight, get serious.

I'm not so sure Anderson Silva or that bad ass Russian are human either.

Matty, lots of skill? J.D., would kill a boxer?

Kind of an apple and oranges debate I guess.

A UFC fighter against a boxer with boxing rules would be decimated. UFC guys coordination and reflexes are....let's say poor.

A fight w/UFC rules would obviously be a different story, but I'd bet you "elite boxers" would fair far better than you might expect.

Although I'm 40, I still train for boxing, and I'd LOVE to have a 3 minute sparring session w/ a slow, testosterone jacked, uncoordinated UFC guy.....(I say as I sit in front of my computer in the safety of my office...)

I certainly wouldn't call GSP uncoordinated.  That dude is like Plasticman LOL
