Forget the Preakness...Bring on Casino Drive and the Belmont

by vegas-runner on 05/16/2008 3:56 PM

As most of you guys all know, I am not a horse bettor... but having had the privilage of spending about 8-10 hrs per day, 7 days a week, hanging out in sportsbooks for about a 7yr period, I got the opportunity to meet many of Las Vegas' most successful horse handicappers. Now just like I did heading into the Kentucky Derby, I also did for this week's Preakness....I asked the guys who I know are the best horse cappers who they liked and the strangest thing happend....

At 3 different sports books, 3 different horse handicappers all brought up the same thing. Now I am aware that these are definately the most difficult races for them to capp, and it has always been that way which is why the majority of pro's do not look to the biggest races to make thier biggest profits....so I was not expecting to walk away with a "Lock" horse for the Preakness, but I did figure that I may at least get pointed in the right direction to make a "guess"....but as I said, to my shock, all 3 men brought up the exact same thing...."Forget the Preakness"...

Its the Belmont that will be the most interesting race in years and if Big Brown can do his part and win this weekend, then we will be in for a treat from what I was told. They all mentioned a horse that is expected to be a "Monster"....the name of this horse is "CASINO DRIVE" and it was bought at the yearling sale at Keenland in 2006 for $950,000 by a Japanese businessman who took the horse to Japan to train....it has only run 2 times, once in Japan where he won by over 11 lengths, and then finally made its debut here in the states at Belmont in the $200k Peter Pan and destroyed the field again by iver 5 lengths and those who saw the race say that he had even more gears for sure....

So if Big Brown can win on Saturday, we will get to see a block-buster of a horse race when the Belmont gets here, because Big Brown will be going for the Triple Crown...and Casino Drive will be front and center looking to show the world why he is the next super horse...what is even more ironic is that Casino Drive is from the mare, Better Than Honour...and I was told by those sharp horse bettors that Better Than Honour has produced back-to-back Belmont Winners, Jazil in '06 and then Rags to Riches last year who upset Curlin who was Horse of the Year...which means that with Casino Drive scheduled to show up at the Belmont, his mare will be going for #3 in a Row there...

It really was so strange to see all of that excitement in these guys eyes and words as they spoke about Casino Drive like it was something that comes along once or twice in a life-time...and the one gentlemen, who over 5yrs ago bumped into me at a sportsbook and said, "Ace, there is a monster coming named Fusaichi Pegasus and you can get over 25-1 for the Derby on him"...and I went right to the window and bet Pegasus and watched him win the Derby...and now this same exact man said, "Ace, this chestnut looks like Secretariat and if they don't mess him up, he has what it takes to be one of the best EVER"...

Like I said, I am not a horse guy but I am sharp enough to know that there are guys out there that are...and the 3 men I am refering to are some of the sharpest and most successful horse bettors of all time...and I now find myself on the sideline this weekend, looking to cheer in Big Brown at the Preakness...so that I can get a chance to finally see this "Monster" that everyone keeps talking about which will come over from Japan...looking to spoil the Triple Crown chances....and I can't wait to see some excitement get back in a sport which has needed it now for a while and from what I hear...just may get it.

You're spot on with this one. Gonna be a great race in 3 weeks.

Great post my man and something else to consider if you want to get a price on this super horse Casino Drive is that if Big Brown indeed wins the Preakness he will go off a huge favorite for more than the obvious reason.

When there is a possible Triple Crown Winner people show up at Belmont to buy thousands of $2 Win tickets on the Horse going for the Triple Crown as Sports memorabilia. They will sell the tickets on ebay slap the ticket on a framed picture and sell it any thing they can do to make money from the Triple Crown Winner. So if Big Brown does his part you'll get inflated money in the Win pool to cash a nice ticket. Let's plan on watching the Belmont at your favorite sportsbook with a couple of cold ones my friend!

Good info about Casino Drive.  I have been hearing a lot about him lately.  I too hope that that Big Brown destroys the Preakness field because I will be at the Belmont race this year.  I can only imagine how electric the crowd will be if Big Brown is going for the Triple Crown.

If BB wins off two weeks then he's the real deal...thats the x factor tomorrow..and Pimlico is a shitty track to begin with even in perfect conditions.   My boys we boxed up a  tri and super hoping he fallls to 2 or 3 with the shots.  Can happen.  But my guess is he blows em all away from that post and small field.  Goes to stud on 6 races, which is whats wrong with the greatest sport of all.

I'm hoping for the exact same thing Ace and believe we could have a race for the ages in the Belmont Stakes.  Thanks for your input, as I have been hearing a ton about this horse as well.

Just an FYI that those pingbacks are links to VR's blog from other sites.  This is a sure sign that we're doing something special here.

Can't wait for the Belmont in 2 weeks.  It's truly going to be a once in a lifetime experience.  I will be there gambling my ass off and trying to bring home some cash.  Any other forum members gonna be at the race that day?

I'll place a small wager on Casino Drive.   I'd like to bet Big Brown and Casino Drive both to Place,  but I don't think my racebook offers that,  only "To Win".   Maybe they'll have a "Belmont without Big Brown"  like they did with the Preakness, and I can take Casino Drive,  that way I'll get a decent payout if he wins or Places.

Well I am so glad that it worked out this way and Big Brown got the Preakness win to set up the match I was hoping for...as the Triple Crown is now only 1 win away...but for some reason, as much as I think it would be great for horse racing and as much as I really have grown to appreciate and respect Big Brown, I just can't get the look that these horse bettors had as they spoke about Casino Drive...almost like a grand-father excited when explaining about his grandson getting into West Point...and as I said in the Blog, the one man actually have me Fusaichi Pegasus to win the Kentucky Derby when it was still winter here in Vegas and had explained how Pegasus was 40-1 when he got down and how he is still over 20-1 and a relative unknown...but a "monster" none the less...and then I sat there in amazement and began hearing more and more hype about Pegasus as the months went by...and finally, just like he said, Pegasus got the roses, but then fell short in the Preakness as a huge fav...

This is going to be a great race and I just can't wait to see it run...and what is even going to make this race bigger is the ties that Casino Driver has and how his Mare produced the past 2 Belmont Winners...this is like something out of a movie and I can't wait to see how it turns out,,,VR

I'm not a big horse bettor at all either, but the belmont should be a race on my radar. All this reading makes me want to throw some money on horses now.

LG, absolutely brother that sounds like a plan. I got the chance to meet up with GBallard about a month back when he came to town and stayed at the Palms...

What a HUGE disappointment for the Belmont...I was looking forward to this race for so long and now we aren't going to get a chance to see it...VR
