Lewis Robert "Hack" Wilson April 26, 1900 – November 23, 1948
Today marks the Anniversary of the passing of one of baseballs “Imortals” Lewis Robert “Hack” Wilson. Who died 71 years ago today.
Theres more than one lesson to be learned when You look at the tragic life of Hack Wilson.. Hack wilson was a MLB player who played during the 1930’s and 40’s. Wilson played namely for Cubs, but also spent time in Cardinals, Phillies, Dodgers, and Giants organizations.
Despite being a heavy drinker and brawler, and standing 5’6’he hit 56 hr’s and had a record 191 Rbi’s In 1930; a record that still stands today!
However, In spite of all the accolades and fame, Hack Wilson died alone, a penniless Pauper who didnt even own a suit to be buried in. His body was left unclaimed for 4 days until MLB finally claimed it and paid for the expenses. Its written, that not even his own son wanted to claim his body.
.Ironically just one week before his death. Wilson said this in an interview:
Talent isn't enough. You need
common sense and good
advice. If anyone tries to tell
you different, tell them the
story of Hack Wilson. ... Kids
in and out of baseball who
think because they have talent
they have the world by the tail.
It isn't so. Kids, don't be too
big to accept advice. Don't let
what happened to me happen
to you
This excerpt from Hack Wilsons last interview, Is still posted and remains in the cubs clubhouse today.
When I look at the story of Hack Wilson I think of the athletes today who think they’re bigger than the game; bigger than life.
Antonio Brown comes to mind as a person who tried to “Bluff” at the game of life only to get rivered in the end..
now, without a chip or a chair his rhetoric falls along the lines of “I just want to play” well the thing is you did play only to find out the joke is on you..
I use Brown as an example because Im a Raider fan and was talking about him with my nephew just the other day. I was telling him where else is he going to make that kind of money while at the same time, doing the thing he loves?
im sure hes realizing that now as hes trying to get back into the NFL while he is still able bodied. Life sure has has a funny way of humbling us doesn’t it?
its Not just Athletes The story can apply to anyone (even sports bettors) who Starts believing the “hype” about themselves and think they are bigger than life itself.
Well, i’ll tell ya life, life is short its unforgiving, and can be taken from you at any moment. its both precious and valuable and cannot be taken for granted its its So valuable that you cannot buy one second of your life back of it for a million dollars once it’s gone it’s gone. Now ponder that for a second.
I may already be telling many of you what you already know but someone once said a good counselor wont tell you the answers (because they don’t they have them) they just bring the obvious back into consciousness.
just thought i’d share my thoughts with my friends here (and I do consider you all my friends) as we near the holidays try to stay grounded, cherish your friends and family and try to be kind to strangers whom you meet Because you never know what they may be going through beyond the cover.
and the moment you feel your feet start to leave the ground and your feeling bigger than the life thats been given you , try to remember the story of Hack Wilson.
Thanks for listening guys
